World Triathlon Championships - Vancouver, Canada

June 14, 2008 | phillipandmarion | Club News | 1 Comment

I had a good race under the circumstances.  My race was the last race to race.  None of the men got the opportunity.  Lifeguards got scared and pulled heaps out of the water in my wave. They said they were cold and had enough and apparently one of the lifeboats rolled and then they really freaked out and they said they had enough.   We had 1.5 m swell at least it took my mind of the 11.8 deg water.  Out in 19.00 mins 5th out.  Frozen in transition couldn’t get wetsuit off and gear on.  Took over 5 mins.  Bike was 1.12. Good bike dry road and great course.  1.1 km hill climb.  Took another 2 mins to get onto run ran a 39.15 10 km run very happy with run.  Will give a detailed report later with
photos.  The mens events were cancelled and 55 and over women were given  a duathlon (run and bike) event instead and no medals awarded.   Complete debacle in the end.  As you can image huge numbers of athetes were well and truly chessed off.  Phillip threw the towel in in the end.  He had a warm up and then put on hold for over an hour and told it was cancelled
and shivering to death.

Proper report coming soon.

Bribie Island Race 17/2/08

February 19, 2008 | Ross Forster | Race Reports | 2 Comments

2008_02170003.JPGTwo AMS members took on the now familiar Bribie Island course on Sunday. Jill Forster and super coach Zipper competed over the race distance of 1 km Swim, 28 km Ride and 8 km run. The swim at Bribie is traditionally a straight, tide assisted swim. But on Sunday morning as entrants prepared for the swim start it became obvious that the tide hadn’t turned and was running fast in the opposite direction. Jill along with many of the other triathletes were not too keen to start the swim until the tide had turned. Thankfully the officials opted for a shorter swim course and proceeded to walk the athletes back up the beach 250 metres. Zipper was heard telling his fellow entrants that they were all soft and they should harden up!  Jill’s wave got away first and she put together a solid race to finish 1st in her

age category. She looked comfortable on the bike (those Saturday morning sessions with Deb and friends are paying off) and ran at a steady pace but found the final 4km of the run tough.

Zipper also raced well; although the wetsuit looked a little tighter than usual (he assured every one that he had simply brought his little brothers one by accident that morning?). As usual Zipper had a strong bike and ran well even after stopping to have more strapping applied to his troublesome knee at the 4km mark. In true form he was out there encouraging fellow athletes’ as he raced the event.

Well done to both club members!

BRIBIE ISLAND - Race 1 - REPORT

Race 1 at Bribie was raced under great conditions and fast times were the order of the day.  With a tide assisted swim and wet suits allowed fast swim times were going to be achieved.  Marion swam the quickest and under 10 minutes for the 750 m swim.  Phillip, Scott and Zipper also had superb swims.  Jill swam within herself.  Phillip was the quickest on the bike with Marion not too far behind.  All the boys under 40 mins and over 30 km average.  Very good run times were also run.  Zipper looks like he has found some run form, running around the 5 min average again.  Jill has stepped up to the bigger distance this year should also be proud of her achievements, well done Jill.  Marion and Jill placed 2nd in their age groups.  Phillip just missed out on the medals with only 32 seconds between 2nd to 4th place.  Maybe those age categories need to be placed on the legs so we chase a little harder?

STATE AQUATHLON - WYNNUM MANLY

Three  hardy stalwarts contested the State Aquathlon Championships.  Zipper, Cam and Ross F rode down to the event for their warm up.  Our roving photographer, Jimmy, also giving us support and taking photos of the event.  Take a look at the photos, some great piccies indeed.

The conditions were very warm and humid indeed with a north easterly wind to make things a little tougher with a chop in the swim to contend with.  The first run went off at a fast and furious pace with Marion clocking 9.10 for the first 2.5 km run and hitting the water in 4th place in the females.  The choppy swim suited and her and came out of the water in equal 2nd with Sarah Fien, a top ACT triathlete who won Japan ironman two years ago.  They ran together for the first 1 km and also caught and past the leader.   Marion put in a surge just before the run turnaround and never looked back and ran hard to finish to take line honours in the womens event by 6 seconds, clocking 9.18 for the 2nd run.  She won her age group by more than 10 minutes.

Cam Wright looked like he was having a race of his life and looked good to the end taking silver in his age group.  Zipper had the toughest age group of the day and with the most entrants where he placed 5th.  Well done to those who did the event.  The swim was a tad short.  Marion’s swim split was 7.40 for the 1 km.

Marion    1st        27.16
Cam W    2nd        31.45
Zipper    5th        38.38

NATIONAL SERIES RACE 1 - NOWRA

Phillip contested the first race in the National Series at Nowra, on the same day as the Aquathlon.  This was also to be a hot and humid day.  The 1500m wetsuit swim was in the river with around a 600 m run uphill back to transition.  Phillip was placed 3rd in his age group out of the water.  The 40 km bike course was quite challenging with an out and back course, uphill going out which was quite a slog and downhill coming home.  Phillip was placed 5th after the bike, on a challenging ride with a time of 1.13.00.   The transitions were quite long.  The run was also hilly, straight up from transition with also a few more climbs midway through the run, which sorted out the runners indeed.  Phillip passed a number of runners on the run but there were no categories on anyone and knowing where you on the course was difficult.  In the end Phillip placed 4th in his age group and had the fastest run by more than two minutes in his age group.  He was only 13 seconds of 3rd and 27 seconds of 2nd place.  In hindsight he said if he had known who he was racing he said he would have dug a bit deeper to challenge for the medals, although he was running quite hard anyway.

Phillip    4th        2.25.27        24.41 (3)        1.16.02   (5)        44.41 (1)

Ed Note.  A new ruling is now in place where age categories don’t need to be placed on athletes.

Thanks to Marion for thee reports!!!

Coomera Half Ironman

October 11, 2007 | Jimmy | Race Reports | No Comments

Big thanks to Marion for completing this report.

11 AMS members contested the Coomera Half and the Coomera Quarterman.  Cam, Woody, Zipper, Mike McGann, Ross F, Mark W, Steve B, Scott and Rob B contested the Coomera Half, for most of them was to consolidate their spots for Ironman Australia or for personal satisfaction.  Marion and Phillip contested the shorter Quarterman event to see how their fitness is going.  The Half Ironman entrants had a fairly tough day at the office.  The swim was a bit squashed to start with.  Some very fast bike splits were recorded on the day.  As the day wore on so did the hot weather and hearing that the aid stations had run out of water, electrolytes etc which was making it tough on the “tail end” of competitors out on the bike and run course.    A little bit of “wind” all over the place on the bike with some testing “hill” sections on the bike course including road works and potholes to contend with.  The run was quite tough with a steep climb at the start of the run and another longish incline around the 7-8 km mark on the run course.  Woody was the quickest home and suffering with stomach problems before the event and still had a respectable time of 4.53.32.  Mark W must have encountered some problems after the swim (bike probs?) and recorded a DNF.  It is great to see the remainder of the club members made home under some trying conditions.  Congratulations to you all, a great result.

Marion and Phillip stood up for the Quarterman event.  The event is half of the Half Ironman, but a good hit out for Olympic distance events.  The swim was also a bit hectic at the start with Marion passing a few waves in the swim some swimmers going all over the place and she was first out in her age group.  Phillip had the fastest swim in his age group, all the swim training must be paying off.  Out on the bike and also some fast times where Phillip went on and passed Marion and then onto the 1 lap course and then a final 10.5 km run.  The run was fairly tough and Marion passing many out on the run to have the 8th fastest run on the day overall with the men.  Phillip also had a good run also passing quite a few on the run.  Marion finished 2nd overall and won her age group by 10 minutes.  Phillip was 2nd in his age group.  Phillip also won a set of Tanita Scales ($350) in random draw and Marion won a Polar HRM.  Some people have all the luck!

_mg_99281422.jpgAMS Highlight- PHILLIP & MARION  SILVER AT STATE DUATHLON CHAMPS - Woody Takes BRONZE

Great to see 9 AMS members, Zipper, Cam, Rosco, Steve B, Darryl, Scott, Woody, Phillip and Marion racing at the State Duathlon Champs.  Some were using this event as a lead up to the Coomera Half.  Others were having a hit to see how their fitness is going.  Jo, Kym and family and Gumby came along to give us encouragement during the event.  Our roving photographer, Jimmy was having a great time snapping piccies while we were having a challenging time.

Weather conditions were great with a bit of cloud cover and the wind picking up a little towards the last lap of the bike.  The testing course was challenging and certainly separated the athletes out over the course of the event.  The 10 km run was two laps running north from the Strawberry patch towards the Cemetary scottbike.jpgensuring a fairly tough run with the hill in the middle. The 40 km bike was 3 laps taking out the two hills at either end of the former two lap course, which would have delighted the few who have done the course before.  The final 5 km run was 1 lap of the first run course.

70 odd athletes lined up at the start and ensuring the best start positions with the 30 to 45 years men age groups being the most hotly contested.  The pace at the start was fast and furious.  Most of AMS worked steadily into their run.  Woody had the fastest first run split with 40.40, followed by Marion with 42.49 and then Phillip with 44.27 and Rosco not far behind in 44.49.  There was certainly a battle going in the 45-49 age group, placing bets who would be the first AMS home on the day with 4 in that age group with Rosco, Steve B, Darryl and Zipper.  Cam and Scott were also doing battle with the group.

Shoes were quickly swapped for bikes and now onto the challenging bike course.  Over the same hill as the run and return south towards Le Mans Kart Race track and return.  Woody had fastest bike split with a 1:10.  Phillip 1:14 passed Marion 1:16 with Steve B in 1:17.  Darryl testing out his new road machine almost went under 1:20 as with Cam W.  Rosco was having a challenge of his own, how many bike tubes was he going to go through in one race?  He encountered two flats where there was plenty glass etc over the course.  Zipper was encouraging everyone along as we went passed and he seemed to be doing well within himself.

Think most of us were just happy to get off the bike and onto the final run to finish.  Marion  had the fastest final 5 km run in 21.42.  She finished 2nd in her age group and 3rd female overall on the day.  Woody was the next quickest in 23.40 placing 5th in his age group and the first AMS member home.  Phillip closely behind in 23.57 also finished 2nd in his age group.  Cam W was next home with a 24.56 final run to place 11th in the 30-34 years.  Steve B was 4th and Rosco was 6th, Darryl 9th and Zipper 10th in the 45-49 age group.  Darryl and Zipper were having a battle of their own in the final run with Zipper owning the bragging rights of the final run with a 14 secs advantage.  Scott was 13th in the 35-39 years being the most popular age group of the day.

We would like to congratulate all who started and finished this fairly tough state event.  Rosco had two flats and still managed to finish when most would have given up.  Zipper with his injury woes still managed to final also.  A GREAT EFFORT BY ALL.

Port Macquarie Ironman - done for another year

April 12, 2007 | cameron wright | Club News | 1 Comment

A good race and holiday was had by all who competed at the Port Macquarie ironman.

The swim went well for all.  The course was crowded, but the wetsuits made the 2 lap course easier.  Then it was into transition, thru the crowded and soaked change tent and into the bike.  The bike course was a 60km out and back course, south over the hills and headlands in town and thru flat sections along the coast.  On the 2nd and 3rd laps a wind came up that certain sections harder.  However with the headwind, there was tail wind heading back into town.  Then it was off the bike and onto the 2 lap course for the run.  The course had both flat sections and hilly sections.  The course followed along the river, past transition, around town and over a few hills and headlands.  Near transition and thru town there were plenty of supporters lining the course.  As darkness started we were handed the glow sticks and plodded on.   As you neared the finish line there was music and the crowds to help you finish.

Details on the members races:

Rob -  came in first 11h 37m. He had the fastest swim of the members.

Woody – was closely behind Rob at 11h 38m.  He kept getting closer to Rob in the run, but couldn’t maintain it.  He had the fastest run time.

Cameron – for my first time, I was happy with my time of 12h 4m.  Struggled thru the 2nd and 3rd laps in the bike, but ran well.

Mark – did well in his first IM, 12h 6m.  Had a good bike time of 6h 7m.

Ross – became sick during the run leg, with trouble keeping food down.  After sometime walking, he managed to run again. 12h 57m.  He had a strong swim and bike legs.  The fastest bike leg of the members.

Jo and Scott – caught up with each other on the bike leg, to finish together. They went thru the finisher chute with the kids.  Scott had some troubles during the bike leg.

Jim H – pulled during the run leg, but had a strong bike leg.

There was a great atmosphere at Port for days before and after the race.   Prior to the race, there was the expo tent, open training sessions on the course and a carbo loading dinner.  Following the race, there was the awards dinner and the melt down party.  Plus the whole town was full of like minded competitors and race supporters.

On behalf of all of the club’s competitors I would like to thank the supporters who travelled down to Port Mac to watch the ironman (Emma, Joe and Jill).  I was great to see a friendly face on the sidelines. I am sure that it was a long tiring day for them.

With ironman the support from the volunteers was awesome.  There were volunteers to help you in transition and heaps of volunteers at the numerous aid stations on the course. These aid stations were always stocked with bananas, other fruit, biscuits, vegemite sandwiches, powerbars, cola, water and sports drink.

I would also like to thank the club members that joined in with us in our training sessions.  Those that tagged along on our rides, go as far as they could and those that joined in our runs.
